A wiki is a webpage that anyone can edit from anywhere. The most famous example is www.wikipedia.org. Typically, a webpage has one author. A wiki allows you to have as many authors as you want. I see this as a way for students to essentially write their own text book in a collaborative fashion. This site is actually a wiki. Each presentor has the ability to edit this site from anywhere.
I will be going over www.pbwiki.com. They have a great tour with a video that explains it better than I can. I will start with signing up for a wiki and cover the basic ways to edit.
I have found even a better video, which should show up below. If not check it out here.
So what are some things you can do with a PBWiki?
- Create a link to a Google map from just an address.
3519 miller bridge road 28612
- use LaTeX to write equations
- Plus a whole lot more. When editing a page, click insert plugin to see what is possible.
How can I use this in my classroom?
The Technology Department hopes to have a wiki option available for you next year. Are are currently exploring the posibility of using PBWiki.
- Pathfinder: Teacher, ITS, and Media Coordinators could collaborate and create a list of websites students should use to explore a specific topic.
- Collaborative Text Books: let the students write their own textbooks.
- ePortfolios: You can upload pictures, attach files, and embed video
- Collaboration between teachers: Create a lesson plan online and other could add to it
- Collaboration between students: Instead of answering questions for a text book, they could use a pathfind and post answers, pictures and video.
